In March of 2007 I attended the Quilting and Sewing Expo here in
Cleveland. I found a pattern for train iron-ons and decided to create my son a
train quilt. I enjoyed working on the quilt. I have learned so much
since than that I thought I would share it here.
This is Ben's quilt before it was washed.

Here are some of the blocks after being washed about 5 times in the washer.
Many of the crayon colored blocks have faded tremendously.

As you can see the crayons have faded with each washing. Since this
time I have found out a little more about using crayons on fabric for every day
use.
I have since learned that using textile medium on the fabric might help with
stopping the fading. I tried it on some extra fabric I am currently
working on. The medium I used turned the fabric slightly yellow. I
have not given up on using crayons, I hope to play around with this new
information and see what I can figure out.
Color Test (started Apr 3, 2008)
It's been suggested to wait one week or a little longer before
finishing this test.
Yellow/ Green Marvy Marker
Marvy is suggested to wait one week to allow to
dry
Blue Colormate marker
Colormate suggest ironing but does not give
temp nor how long to iron set the marker.
Each of the crayon colorings
were only one coloring of the crayon, you can darken the area by doing a second
coat of crayon.
Blue Prang Crayon (nothing)
Prang is often suggested as the best crayon for
crayon drawings as it has more pigment in it.
Red Prang Crayon (clear coat spray)
Found this suggestion on a board and decided to
try it.
Green Prang Crayon (textile Medium)
Textile medium is suggested as a way to help
keep your crayon on any item that might be washed.

Prang Crayon and clear coat still wet
after I sprayed it. It too leaked through the fabric. I think I over
sprayed it.

Prang and Textile Medium.

When I put the textile medium on
the crayon it caused the crayon to bleed through the fabric. You can see
where it bleed through on the paper towel that was under the fabric when I put
the medium on.
The Test continues
11 Apr 2008
I did not iron any of these even
though it was suggested for the textile medium and the colormate marker.
All three test were done the same day with my reg. laundry.
1st washing in regular cold water,
washed with Tide detg. Also went through the dryer. There does not appear
to be much of a change in between the markers or the crayons.

2nd washing, 30 minute sit cycle, cold water, Tide detg. Air
dried.
Marvy a little lighter, Colormate does show some
lightening. Prang blue crayon shows fading. Red Prang a little
lighter and Green Prang a little lighter but not much.

3rd washing, cold water, 30 minute soak, Tide Detg. dryer
As you can see there has been some more fading with the
untreated crayon. The clear coat is also starting to fade around the
corner. The textile is holding up pretty well.

4th washing.
30 minute soak in hot water, Tide detg. dryer.
Marvy doing well, Colormate doing ok, the crayon without
anything is fading fast (yes pun intended, lol) the clear sealent is doing
well. Textile is doing well too.

5th washing Apr. 18th
cold water, tide detg. and dryer
marvy seems to be doing well still. Colormate as
lightened, Prang continues to lighten, Prang with sealant (a little softer to
the touch too) has lightened some, Prang with textile med seems to be doing
well.

I plan on washing the sample a few more times with the laundry
next week.
